I managed to eat a two-flames-hot plate of pineapple fried rice without my eyes watering. I will defeat my northern European heritage yet!My friend and I chose to see Walk The Line. I've been a fan of Johnny Cash's music practically my whole life, but I didn't know much of the details of his life. The smattering I did know I was able to gel with the bits that were depicted on screen.I heard Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon both learned to play their instruments and sang their own parts. I must say I was impressed. While their singing registers weren't exactly the same, they did well in imitating Johnny Cash and June Carter. I saw this film at the Mann 6 in St. Louis Park, near Excelsior and Hwy 100. I'd never been to that theater before, which has a 2-down, 4-up screen setup. Stadium seating and a comfortable temperature were among its advantages. I didn't try the snackbar, but it looked well-stocked. Not a bad little place. Comments (2) Comments on this Entry: (soelo on Jan 19, 2006 10:34 AM) wow, I used to go to that theater all the time. I had no idea they have stadium seating now, since I think the last time I was there was 2002. (Nate on Jan 19, 2006 9:45 PM) As far as I know, they don't have stadiium seating. Maybe they have it downstairs and not upstairs. I have only seen movies upstairs...
Erica:Minnesota Stories has a video up from the meeting that Minnesota Film Arts held at the Oak Street last weekend.Haven't heard what's happening? In short, there's been some financial mismanagement and now folks are scrambling to keep the theater open. Plenty of related links over at Minnesota Stories. Comments (0) Comments on this Entry:
Nate:The Children's Theater production of "Reeling" based on the lifes work of Buster Keaton opens this weekend. It is a silent movie on stage using some gags taken directly from his films. I have a VERY small role in it, but that gave me the chance to watch it last night. I have to say that it is one of the most unique theater expieriences I have had in a long time. Tremendous physical acting, wonderful music, and a folly artist on stage. How could you go wrong?I recommend that people of all ages check this show out. It is short, only 55 minutes long, so if you take the bus the transfer will still be good when you get out ;) The acting is absolutly incredible. The guy they nabed to play the "buster" role is spot on. He even looks a bit like him. I laughed and stared in wonderment the entire time. Please come and support this very different work. You will be glad you did. Comments (0) Comments on this Entry:
JasonT:Homocore is hosting a short film festival tonight at the Bryant Lake Bowl. The Bearded Child Film Festival is at 7pm tonight, doors open at 6. Admission is 7 bucks and the program is listed on the website.Alleviate some of the concerns about Minnesota Film Arts and the future of the Oak Street for a few hours tonight. See you there! Erica:Did anyone go to Carpe Mammae on Saturday night?7:00 p.m. to sunrise. By invitation only, according to the website. Must have been quite an event.(via ljtwincities) Comments (0) Comments on this Entry:
Erica:The Star Tribune's Nightwatch section tells you where to eat after bar time. It lists the downtown Pizza Luce, Little Tijuana Cafe, Mickey's (the other one), Caffrey's Deli & Subs, Flameburger, Pineda Tacos, the Dinkytowner, and Club 3 Degrees (the country's largest Christian nightclub?!).Via MNspeak, where commenters are offering further suggestions including Santana's, Uptown Diner, Manny's Tortas, SoHo Cafe, the Block E Panchero's (access via garage or skyway only), and Bobby & Steve's.I think I might need to print off the list, shrink it down, laminate it, and carry it in my wallet. JasonT:I'm going to see Jamie Cullum at the Fitzgerald Theater on 12 March. I've never been to that venue, but I did see him at the Fineline about a year ago. The place was packed for that show and my friends and I were stuck in the back. For this show, I have tickets in the second balcony, but I'm not sure what row. Hopefully it's at the front of the second balcony, and I'll have a good view. Tickets went on sale today at noon, and sadly, I missed the Cities 97 presale yesterday, because I didn't keep a close enough eye on my e-mail. By the time I saw it, they had sold all the presale tickets. Alas. Also, Lewis Black is coming to Mystic Lake in March. I've never seen a performance there, but may have to check it out for Lewis. It'll be a nice lead-in to Jon Stewart hosting the Oscars. I'm actually looking forward to it this year. Comments (1) Comments on this Entry: (Erica on Jan 15, 2006 1:20 PM) I love Lewis Black. Are those tickets on sale yet? I bet it sells out pretty quick.
Nate:If you love Australian wine, you can't miss this one day event. In all of the World Markets in the Twin Cities, for one day only, all Australian wine is on sale 20% off it's current price. There are some crazy deals. You can get a Rosemount Shiraz for under six bucks!! You can even get a Penfolds Grance for only $135.99!! Now, I know I work there and this is way more than a ploy to come buy some stuff at my store. I am planning on going in and getting a case of stuff myself.A recommendation: Timbuktu Big Block Red. It is a yummy blend of Cab, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Best of all, it is only $7.99 this Saturday.Come on in!! We are open from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. It'll be a "G'Day" for wine.Sorry about that last sentence. Comments (2) Comments on this Entry: (Erica on Jan 12, 2006 7:18 PM) Thanks for the heads up. And for the pre-emptive apology. (Lex on Jan 17, 2006 1:52 PM) Hey, does that include Yellow Tail? =P
Kristi:I know I already wrote about this a few weeks ago, but a news story today about St. Paul voting to enact a citywide smoking ban really surprised me. I had no idea they were even considering voting on this again. But...I guess...okay? What are some other cities in Ramsey county where one can go smoke in a bar now if one were so inclined? Ahhh...here we go. Comments (2) Comments on this Entry: (Erik on Jan 12, 2006 4:55 PM) *wafts fresh air into lungs* (DaveP on Jan 13, 2006 5:30 AM) Don't forget Anoka County. Fridley's just a short hop from Nordeast, and Sharx is the closest of the bars in Fridley.,107678/162/record.html
Lex:I just discovered that I have MLK day off from work. I can't recall ever working for a company that had that day as a holiday. Talk about a pleasant surprise! What should I do on my day off? Comments (1) Comments on this Entry: (Nate on Jan 11, 2006 3:56 PM) You could go see a movie. There are SOOOO many out that I need to see. Maybe you could see two. You know, sneek into one after the first. Or maybe I'm just saying what I should do...
Nate:The Star Trib had an article today talking about the removal of the Peanuts characters from the Mall of America. What?!?!?!? How silly is that? Without a neat theme, that park is DOOMED. Supposedly the owners of the mall are going to be making an announcement "soon" regarding a new partnership. Many rides are not gonna be affected, but I am curious as to what they are going to call the Giant Kite Eating Tree once it has been repainted. Mostly, I'm just sad to see it the characters go. The article talks about how good a fit they were. I am a huge fan of the Peanuts mostly because they are home grown. It was neat to have a unique park that fit it's surroundings.Maybe this will give the mall a chance to reinvent the whole thing from the ground up. Right now, they are going to call it the Park at the MOA. LAME!!! They have to come up with something better. They also need to include a few more thrill rides. I understand the need to make it family friendly, but the truth of the matter is it is young adults and the 20-30 year old set that has money to spend frivolously on stuff like this. I, personally, wouldn't pony up the dough to get an unlimited ride wrist band. I also very rarely spend any money on single ride "points". It just isn't all that interesting to me. Raise the roof a little and add a free fall. How about an underground high speed coaster? Maybe they need to hire some ex-imagineers from Disney... Comments (1) Comments on this Entry: (soelo on Jan 17, 2006 12:32 PM) I agree, the Peanuts characters leaving is bad, and they really need more variety in the rides. I rode the Timberland Twister about a year ago, but before that it had probably been at least a few years since I'd been to Camp Snoopy. I think they could fit more cool rides in if they took out all of the restaraunts that are actually in the middle section, and whatever they have on the third floor of the North side. Then make a ride that flings you all over the park, and get rid of the sad rollercoater that is now like 14 years old.
JasonT:Tomorrow is Wednesday, and I know everyone is always wondering to themselves, "What do I do on a Wednesday night?" Well, do I have answers for you!I've already written about Transmission at the Hexagon with DJ Jake Rudh. Here's another alternative, which I've known about for awhile, but only experienced for the first time last week.Wednesday night, DJ Terrance spins at Jet Set, a martini bar in the warehouse district. It's just down the block from Theatre de La Jeune Lune, and it might look like it's closed. The tinted windows don't let much of the already dim light out, but the atmosphere inside is very relaxed. The decor is minimal and the drinks are tasty, although a little on the expensive side. Their cosmos are worth it, though!Terrance spins some space-age lounge with a clubby edge, like Mancini's Baby Elephant Walk mixed with a techno beat. Some of the best stuff I've heard out for awhile. The address is 115 N 1st St, so just west of 1st and 1st. It's worth hunting for. Comments (2) Comments on this Entry: (K on Jan 11, 2006 12:02 PM) You may wanna mention that JetSet is technically a gay bar. (JasonT on Jan 13, 2006 1:49 PM) I suppose so, but it really seems like most of the bars downtown are getting so mixed, I forget sometimes which ones are "Gay bars" and which ones are "Straight bars". The Gay 90s frequently feels unfriendly to gays, and Grumpy's seems more gay than straight on some nights.
Greg:We hit the Minnesota Swarm lacrosse game on Friday, and it was awesome!I’ve never actually watched a lacrosse game before, but luckily announcer Rusty Kath, also the St. Paul Saints announcer, had mini-videos that ran throughout the game to explain the random questions most of us in the crowd had. I really enjoyed all the overheard comments in our section in the realm of, "Well I think it's this," and "It must be a penalty," and "That was cool. I don't know what you call that, but that was cool."It's like hockey with a shot clock and the same brutal crosschecks. Plus you're allowed to hit people with your stick! Even though they lost, it was very cool and tickets are extremely cheap compared to other TC pro sports. And it was nice the game got over by 10 so I could still hit a downtown St. Paul concert AND hit a bar afterward (where ironically enough, ESPN was replaying the Swarm game from earlier that evening). If only the Xcel Center didn't charge $5.75 for a 12 oz beer. Comments (3) Comments on this Entry: (Lex on Jan 10, 2006 9:37 AM) They were really pushing the Swarm games at the Wild game I attended. They had LAX 101 videos running on the scoreboard screen to explain small parts of the rules of Lacrosse. The 30-second shot clock was explained in one of them.Between periods they had a competition between two kids who were learning to play Lacross to see which one could catch the most balls and get them into the net. That was cute to watch. (Becca on Jan 10, 2006 3:45 PM) I was a the Swarm game too on Friday and had a blast. I was a little skeptical at first because I had never seen a lacrosse game before, but it was really fun.I found out about the game on sotanLIFE.com. It's an awesome new local search engine with a ridiculous amount of information, but they also write great articles. They did one on the Swarm and I had to check it out. Also, everyone was really laid back and social, so it was an added bonus. (Greg on Jan 10, 2006 3:51 PM) I also liked that they played music DURING the game. There were even some fights! Again, the beer was just super expensive.
Erica:Writes Linda Mack in the Star Tribune. Here are the bullet points. Click through for the commentary.I wish that the Guthrie Theater on Vineland Place were not going to be demolishedI wish that Hennepin Avenue felt safe and looked spiffy.I wish that Minneapolis would learn from St. Paul's attention to public places and St. Paul would learn from Minneapolis' architectural acumen.I wish that a deal would be forged for a Twins ballpark on the Rapid Park site north of Target Center.I wish that the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board would realize that a DeLaSalle High School football stadium on Nicollet Island is incompatible with the island's historic status. In our growing outer ring, I wish that suburban stereotypes were turned on their heads.Agree? Disagree?(via Behind The Mortgage) Comments (5) Comments on this Entry: (DaveP on Jan 10, 2006 6:45 AM) A football stadium is out of character for the island, but houses that can only be transferred to DFL-insiders is just fine.See for more. (Alex on Jan 10, 2006 4:26 PM) Though the method of the transfer may be in question, officially it was a lottery, but who really knows - this was in '83 or so.But the part about the sweetheart tax deal is not quite what JS portrayed apparently: I like Joe as much as the next guy, and he has an entertaining show at times, but he's got this aspect of the story wrong. (DaveP on Jan 11, 2006 6:24 AM) It was officially a lottery, but it was funny how everyone who "won" in the lottery was somehow connected with the DFL or city staff at the time. But then I was one of the rare people who liked the island before it got "rehabilitated", too. (Crystal on Jan 11, 2006 9:47 AM) Good wish list!Hennepin Ave started to look spiffy with Block E going in, but the full effect never really took hold.Yes, please, let's keep a stadium in Minneapolis! It is such a bummer when I visit other cities and stay downtown, yet have to travel quite a ways out to actually get to their stadiums. Also, being a suburbanite myself, I also hope the stereotypes get turned upside down. Just because we live outside of the city, doesn't mean we never go there! Plus, do you know how much more house you can get when you venture into the suburbs!?! (Bob Roscoe on Jan 12, 2006 11:20 PM) Soucheray's comments on the proposed DeLaSalle stadium on Nicollet Island are highly inaccurate about who can live there. Most of the houses were rehabbed in the 1990s under a Mpls Community Development Agency program by people who were the only ones applying for these houses, and the other buyers were selected under a strict lottery method. One of my friends who did a rehab was a deep conservative, as were several ex-hippies who formed a cooperative. The DeLa Salle stadium is flat-out (pun intended) wrong.
Nate:I just got an email today announcing a new film being shot here this spring. They are going to cast almost everyone from the talent pool here in the Twin Cities. How cool is that? No word yet as to who exactly is making this film. Might just be another independent film. The point is, there have been A LOT of movies being made here in our cities as of late. Two zombie flicks just wrapped last fall, I was an extra in a romantic comedy last summer, and "The People's Movie" shot in a few locations around Minnesota. North Country was a big profile film shot in Minnesota staring Charlize Theron.I want to see more. We already have a booming theater community, would it be so hard to ramp up the movie production? What we really need is a few sound stages. Put them out in Anoka or some other silly suburb (no offense, Anoka). We have a great amount of different landscapes to shot in the near vicinity. I think Minnesota would be a very viable location for filming. Now we just need a backer... Comments (1) Comments on this Entry: (Lex on Jan 10, 2006 9:39 AM) I've a friend who did lighting and effects on a horror movie this past year, too. I'll push him your way when you get your movie production company off the ground!
